Dave, Alan and I headed out to climb Grindstone Mountain as a last training climb before our Rainier trip the following weekend. Grindstone is in the Icicle ridge area, outside of Leavenworth. The forecast was for hot and sunny on the east side, so it was shorts and lots of water. Surprisingly, it started raining just before arriving at the trailhead, which made for wet trek through the overgrown trail.
First view of our summit, we were on the only ones on the trail.
We encountered snow, pretty solid from about 6200' where we left the trail and headed for the north ridge of Grindstone.
The view from the ridge was great, but there were dark clouds heading in from the east and we could see curtains of rain falling in the distance.
Soon, lightning was striking around us, so we quickly left the ridge, only 400' from the summit. We'll have to come back another day and summit this one.
Grindstone Mountain - 7533'
Trailhead 3000'
